Years 5 and 6
There are 4 classrooms in Upper Key Stage Two. The classes are:
Team Amethyst - Mr Holcroft
Team Violet - Mrs Linforth
Team Magenta - Mr Kilner
Team Lavender - Mrs MacManus
We are also assisted by the phenomenal the wonderful Mrs Butler, the amazing Mrs Fisher and the stupendous Miss Williams.
Upper Key Stage 2 Reminders
Years 5 and 6 have PE each Monday and Wednesday. Year 5 have swimming every Tuesday!
Your child will have a 'Reading Reward Card' in their reading record. Please ensure that your child reads each day - continuing to read with them is wonderful! If your child reads every day in one week they will receive one stamp. When they have achieved 4 stamps your child will be given a reward in school. If you are unsure about anything, please speak to a member of the team. Thank you for your continued support and happy reading!

Links to Online Learning
AI uses
For Safer Internet Day, we learned about AI, and how it can be used both positively and negatively. We looked at different scenarios and offered advice to help others.
Storytelling Week
We had a fabulous time celebrating National Storytelling Week. We discussed favourite song lyrics, attended an online lesson with storyteller, rapper and author Alim
Kamara, and then wrote our own raps and poems about being superheroes.
Netball
This half term, we have worked hard on learning the rules of Netball. The trickiest part was not moving with the ball - pivoting!
Nutrient Transportation!
We learned how nutrients are absorbed into our blood. Special cells help absorbed nutrients cross the intestinal lining into your bloodstream. We used skittles and water to demonstrate this!
Hippo Time
In Life Skills, we have reflected on how resting is an important part of being able to learn and move forward. When hippos need time out, they lie in the mud; when we need Hippo Time, there are all sorts of things we can do that help us to feel calm and ready to move on.
Young Voices
Children in choir went to Co-Op Live to take part in an incredible concert with over 7800 children! It was a truly amazing evening. We loved singing and dancing together!
Pulse Rates
With our new understanding of the Circulatory System, we have planned and completed experiments to investigate our pulse rate. We did both moving and stationary exercises to compare!
The Golden Age
In History, we have been learning about the Early Islamic Civilisation, and how successful they were! Baghdad at that time was a city with impressive buildings, canal structures and beautiful fountains. We enjoyed drawing a bird's-eye view following clues.
Blood!
Science is all about the circulatory system this half-term. We have made models of the heart to investigate how it works as a pump, and we have modelled blood to learn about plasma, platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells.
Drama - Early Islamic Civilisation
We had a fabulous time with our visitor, Michael, taking part in a drama workshop. It was a fantastic end to our History topic! We learned about key timeline dates, practised being different every day characters from this time, and did freeze frames pretending we were in the House of Wisdom, that we were The City of Baghdad, and then visiting a a busy market.
Online Safety
We have been learning about keeping safe online. This has included discussing the positive and negative impacts of sharing online, the importance of secure passwords, and strategies to report others when needed, and how to prevent hacking.
Celebration Evening
It was lovely to show our books and classrooms to our grown ups when they visited after school! Thank you to all who attended!
Dynamics, Pitch, Texture!
In music, we have worked on representing changes in pitch, dynamics and textures using graphic notation. We have improvised and created different textures when working in groups, using instruments, our voices and body percussion.
Speaking Up
In English we are focusing on how people have used the power of their voices to make the world a better place. We are going to learn from the best orators so that we can give voice to things we feel passionately about.
Autumn
Advent Stations
Our GIFT Team were a real credit to us this year as they led every child in the school through the Advent Stations over at St. Edmund's church. Well done GIFT Team, and thank you!
Pulleys
In Design Technology we made pulleys to allow a smaller effort to exert a greater force. These will be used when we design an Eco-bike gadget.
Let there be light!
In Science, we have been investigating how light travels in straight lines, and how we can redirect light by reflecting it. We practised changing the angle of incidence by adjusting the position of reflective surfaces.
Periscopes
To apply our understanding of how light can be redirected in straight lines, we made prototype periscopes. We had to get the position of the mirrors just right so that the angles of incidence could redirect the light down the periscope and into our eyes.
Looping and Remixing
In Music, we have been learning to play simple looped rhythms (from Somewhere Under the Rainbow) to perform as a loop. To finish our unit we will combine these loops to create remixes!
Viking Control
As historians, we have investigated how Vikings were both raiders and settlers at different points in history. We have analysed how their settlement of what is now England was not straightforward: their control varied at different points in time.
Respect
Life Skills has focussed on respect: how we can show respect to others, and also how we would like to be respected in different spheres of life. We reflected on respect online, between friends, strangers and family members.
Basketball
We have been practising dribbling and shooting to improve our skills in basketball. It has been wonderful to be back with our friends and classmates again to work together.
Robin Hood...
"And his brave Merry Men!" The pantomime was absolutely fantastic this year; the children loved watching Robin Hood take on the phoney Prince John.
Young Poet Laureates
The National Literacy Trust is creating the first every Young Poet Laureate for The North. Here's hoping some of our children get shortlisted!
Block, Guard, Support
Year 5 and 6 have been practising skills involved in lots of games and sports. In Beyond the Physical lessons, children have been developing their skills of blocking, guarding, and supporting.
Resilience
In Life Skills, we have been looking at the different tools we can get hold of us to help us be resilient when we face obstacles and challenges. Challenges are to be expected in life and we want to be able to face them and continue on.
Rainbows
In Science we have proven that white light is composed of all colours of the light spectrum. We used prisms to split the light across its different wavelengths. Tricky to do, but very cool, very scientific, and very beautiful!
Class Worship
Classes have spent time reflecting on Harvest: we have thought deeply about gratitude, and how we can be good stewards of God's creation.
Comparing Fractions
Year 6 have been comparing fractions and it has been so wonderful to see them use different techniques and reasoning. Some children used fraction walls to compare, others used bar modelling. Some children used their knowledge of halves to compare fractions by recognising if they were more than or less than a half.
Fruity Thinking
Our S.U.M.O (Stop. Understand. Move On.) principle for this half-term is: Fruity Thinking. Although we might not have control over things that happen to use, we can have greater control over how we respond. Fruity Thinking helps us to make our positive thoughts a little louder!
Complimentary Colours
We have been practising using complimentary colours in watercolour - sometimes to add depth to shapes and sometimes just for pleasing effects.
Young Poet Laureates
The National Literacy Trust is creating the first every Young Poet Laureate for The North. Here's hoping some of our children get shortlisted!
Hockey
In our sport PE lessons, we have been learning and competing in hockey matches.
Santa Dash
To celebrate all of Santa's efforts, we have been dashing around the astro in Santa hats. Next year, we'll use reindeer!
Cogs
We are investigating mechanisms in Design Technology this half-term. We built prototype cogs using different materials to test how to make more effective cog systems.
Anti-Bullying 2025
We have reflected on the theme of this year's anti-bullying campaign: Power for Good. Looking at the power different people or groups hold in relationships helped us to think carefully about how we can show our school values of Love, Care and Respect.
Chiarascuro
As part of our Art unit, we have investigated 'chiarascuro', which is how artists treat light and shade. We used masking and charcoal to create an interesting, 3-D effect.
Evolution
In Science we have been about evolution. Through fossil records, we have studied our evidence for change over time. Through experimentation and modelling, we have explored the mechanism of natural selection and the time scales involved evolution.
Clause Structures
We have used sentence strips to experiment with changing clause structures and marking clauses. Question tags were a breeze to learn this way too!
