St Edmund's RC Primary School

Year 6 2016

There are two Year 6 classes this year: 6JH (Mr Holcroft) and 6JD (Mrs Dumbleton).

Year 6 had a fantastic leavers' trip to Blackpool on Monday 17th July. After a busy morning in the Sandcastle water park and lunch in Peggy's Cafe, we headed for the beach for fun and games in the afternoon. We received many compliments on the children's wonderful manners and excellent behaviour throughout  the day. Well done year 6.

Latest Year 6 News...

Easter Bunny

Myles and Beth, our head boy and girl, were given the job of playing Easter Bunny this year. They became very popular when they delivered chocolate eggs to all the children (and staff!)

Egg Hunt

Our Spring term parent celebration was an Easter Egg Hunt around the school ground. Parents were invited to join the children to hunt for eggs. Each egg contained a question relating to Easter, and the children needed to recall everything they have learnt in Religion lessons this term.

The winners were awarded with a prize. Thank you to all the parents who came out and braved the cold weather.

Easter Gardens

We explored the symbolism involved in creating an Easter Garden, including looking up the Biblical references in the Gospels. We then spent the afternoon in the peace garden creating our beautiful Easter Gardens.

World Book Day 2017

Congratulations to all the children who made such a wonderful effort with their costumes this year. We had a great day creating sock puppets and reading our favourite books. Thank you to the parents who came to join in our Cosy Read session at the end of the day.

Spring Parents Celebration

Thank you to all the parents, carers and friends who came to support us at this very busy afternoon. The children had been busily preparing Indian food following our study of the book 'A Beautiful Lie', and they were thrilled to share it with their grown-ups.

Recipes for the foods we cooked can be found here:

Chick pea dahl

Chicken biryani

Cucumber raita

Mango Lassi

Food Technology Project

We spent a week planning and preparing a meal to share with our parents and carers.

Skills practised included:

  • selecting ingredients
  • food hygiene
  • following a recipe
  • peeling, chopping and dicing vegetables and meat
  • using the hob
  • stirring safely and monitoring during cooking

The children's behaviour was excellent and they were proud to serve their creations during our parents celebration.

Safer Internet Day

We spent the day thinking about how to keep safe online, especially when using Social Media sites or sharing pictures online.

See the 'Jigsaw' video below.

Holocaust Memorial Day

We started the day with a beautiful reflective Mass in church. Thank you to all the parents and supporters who joined us.

We then spent the day completing a range of activities: poetry writing, painting and making Jewish Challah bread.

Parents Celebration

Thank you to all the parents who joined us to take part in our bauble making workshop. The results were fantastic and the children enjoyed showing off their wire sculpture skills.

Crucial Crew

On Wednesday 16th November, we went to the annual Crucial Crew event at Haldene Barracks. We attended workshops aimed at preparing pupils to be happy, safe and healthy as they make the transition to High School. Workshops were run by different agencies including: RNLI, St. John's Ambulance, UrbanVision, British Transport Police and Greater Manchester Police.

This year the school decided to take part in a No Pens Day. No Pens Day encourages schools and settings to put down their pens and to run a day of speaking and listening activities. The aim of No Pens Day Is to raise awareness of speech, language and communication needs.

As part of our English lesson for the day the children created news broadcasts detailing the bizarre incident which took place in the town of Preston, Australia. We think the children more than rose to the challenge of improvising their scripts without being able to write anything down!

Police and Fire Service visit

This week, we were visited by two of our local PCSO's and an officer from the Fire Station. They came to talk to us about sensible and safe behaviour in our community as we get near to Halloween and Bonfire Night.

At the end of the visit we had the chance to try on their uniform and we all had a go at taking fingerprints.

Peace Day

On Wednesday 21st September we celebrated the United Nations International Day of Peace. Our two classes took part in a range of activities across the day culminating in a Service in Church. We all visited the peace garden and released balloons with peaceful messages attached.

On Thursday morning,Year 6 led the whole school Peace Mass. A group of girls danced as a post-communion reflection and the chaplains modelled sign language to the song 'With my own two hands'

Altar Servers

Well done to Mia, Joe, Sanmmy and Sharon as they have made an excellent start to their new role as altar servers in church.

Thanks go to Mr Greenhalgh for all his hard work in training them.

European Day of Languages

Monday 26th September was European Day of Languages. We had a whole school French son

We learnt a song called 'Promenons nous dans les bois' - Watch out for the surprise at the end of the song!

Our Year 6 group won the local cluster competition, so will represent our school at the Salford Finals on 21st November.

Computing

In the first half term, we started our first Year 6 computing project.

We used software called Discovery Coding to write block code to create our own apps. Working in pairs, we learnt how to write code to control items on the screen.

By the end of the sessions, every child had created their own app - it was very exciting!
