Maths No Problem
The children are enjoying using the new Maths No Problem programme in school. Across LKS2, children are growing in confidence when explaining their thinking. If you missed the parent briefing in the hall, click here to view the briefing notes.
Anti-Bullying Week and Safer Internet Day
So many children and staff came to school wearing their odd socks to show that it is OK to be different, and that we are all #freetobeme.
We created a 'Jar of Changes' which contains small, simple ways we can change our behaviour to improve other people's feelings and emotions. Why not try smiling at someone today? Or giving them a compliment. They will feel better, and so will you.
We completed activities from SaferInternet.org which helped us to think carefully about how we can protect our identity online.
If you have any concerns about your child's online activities, please speak to Mrs Yardley.
Remember - if in doubt, Block It and Report It immediately.
The Great Bread Bake Off
You've seen the show, now prepare yourself for the amazing creations our amateur bakers will be baking over the next two weeks. The children have been learning abut the history of Warburtons Bakers and designing their own new products using a range of ingredients.
We explored a range of sweet and savoury ingredients and discussed which could be combined together to create a new and unique product.
We had great fun producing our crafts and products for the Christmas Markets.
As part of our school-wide European Day of Languages celebrations, children were invited to bring in items which reflected their cultural heritage.
Thank you to all the children who brought and shared items from home.
Exploring Ancient Egypt
In History lessons, we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt. we completed an enquiry based learning session using artefacts. The children had great fun exploring the range of artefacts and remembered lots of important facts and vocabulary from our lessons.
We spent a lesson researching Ancient Egyptian beliefs. We found out that the Ancient Egyptians believed in many different Gods who each had different qualities. We created character profiles for different gods and held a talent contest to compare them - Ancient Egypt’s got Talent!
As part of our Science Topic 'Plants', we have been exploring the parts of plants. We have planted some bean seeds and we are monitoring their growth each day. We conducted an experiment to explore ‘capillary action’, learning how water naturally climbs up very small spaces such as the tiny tubes in the roots and stems of plants.
As part of our Science Topic 'Animals including Humans', we have been learning about nutrition and movement. We have been learning abut the different bones in our skeletons and how our muscles work together to help us move. We made model elbow joints using elastic bands as muscles. It was very tricky, but we managed it in the end!
Four children from Year Three were selected to take part in a wrestling tournament at Sharples Gym in Bolton. They had a brilliant time and brought back the overall Gold medal and an individual gold medal as well. Well done Team St Edmund’s!
Miss Lomax has been teaching the Year 3 pupils how to play the ukulele. They have learnt the chords F and C so that they can play the 'Baby Shark' song!
In Science, we have been investigating what shadow are and how they are formed. We used torches to test a range of materials to decide whether they were opaque, transparent or translucent. We then had great fun creating shadow animals with our hands. Look out for shadows while you are out and about - ask your child why there are no shadows on a cloudy day.
We have been creating PowerPoint presentations to showcase our learning about Ancient Egypt. The children are honing their skills at opening and creating documents using Office365.
Sport Relief 80's Danceathon
We raised money for Sport Relief with an 80's Danceathon in our school hall. Everyone had lots of fun dressing up in colourful clothes. Thank you to Mrs Fisher for organising such a wonderful day.
World Book Day
On World Book Day, the children came to school dressed in a wonderful range of fantastic costumes. They published their wonderful magical spell poems and completed fun activities relating to reading and books.
Spring Talk for Writing
We have been using the explanation text 'How does the Human Helicopter actually work?' as a basis for our writing this half term. The children are already beginning to think up their own incredible inventions for their writing task at the end of the unit.
Autumn Talk for Writing
We have been using the text 'Journey to the lonely mountain', based on Tolkien's The Hobbit, as a basis for our English lessons this half term. Watch the videos below to listen to the children retelling the story.
Our Talk for Writing unit ended with us publishing our amazing journey stories. Team Teal visited the Nursery children to share their stories with them.
As part of our Science topic, we went on a rock hunt around the school environment.
Ask your child to identify different types of rock while you are out and about.
